From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In grammar, the comparative is the form of an adjective or adverb which denotes the degree or grade by which a person, thing, or other entity has a property or quality greater or less in extent than that of another, and is used in this context with a subordinating conjunction, such as than, as...as, etc. If three or more items are being compared, the corresponding superlative needs to be used instead. StructureThe structure of a comparative in English consists normally of the positive form of the adjective or adverb, plus the suffix -er, or (in the case of polysyllabic words borrowed from foreign languages) the modifier more (or less/fewer) before the adjective or adverb. The form is usually completed by than and the noun which is being compared, e.g. "He is taller than his father", or "The village is less picturesque than the town nearby". Than is used as a subordinating conjunction to introduce the second element of a comparative sentence while the first element expresses the difference, as in "Our new house is larger than the old one", "There is less water in Saudi Arabia than in the United States", "There are fewer people in Canada than in California." GNU Free Documentation License What kind of jobs can i get with a degree in philosophy/comparative literature? Q. now I think I pretty much gave up my plan to be a doctor as a result of my abhorrence for any lab-related classes. But i know there isn't much option for my current major right now, which is philosophy and possibly comparative literature as well. Is it even possible to get a decent-paying job with those degrees? Yes, I am planning to enter grad school and further equip myself. Asked by slicinglife - Thu Oct 23 11:38:08 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Philosophy is a degree you can literally take anywhere, The skills it teaches you are the natural leadership abilities that are in high demand in todays work place (communication, logic, conflict resolution, problem solving, and an ability to adapt to any enviornment). Particularly, philosophy is a good preparation for law school because you deal with ethical as well as metaphysical issues. For my final paper, I have to write a comparative literature paper on 2 works that we have read in class. I am totally lost on where to start with this. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Asked by Dwarf797 - Wed Mar 3 12:52:30 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well start off with comparing. Make a list of the common themes of each. Think about the main characters (if there are any), the setting, and most importantly the message that is in each work. Then you can start comparing and contrasting the two. Working at the similarities (how/why are they the same?) and differences (how/why are they different?). That should be a good start for you!
