What is the main difference between living in The United States and Australia?
Q. I've lived in the United States my entire life. I'm now 23 years old and find that I do love it here but I need to live somewhere else for awhile. What are some of the main differences in laws and such between the two? Also, is it an easy or moderately hard culture to absorb into? Are jobs available? Is the cost of living less or more when comparing the two nations? I would love to go to college there and live there. I just have no IDEA where I need to start. So please, anyone that has done this or know what steps to take, please get with me. I have so many questions. Thanks in advance.

A. I moved from Australia to the US in December after spending about 6 months before that in the US...there are some huge differences between the US and Australia, but that also depends on where you live in the US and where you move to in Australia... I moved from Cairns, Far North Queensland which is paradise on earth...seriously...I had the best beaches in the world 15 minutes away, the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest a few hours drive away and the beauty of Fitzroy Island and the Great Barrier Reef less than an hour away. It was a lifestyle where I lived, slow and laid back with lots to do, new people to meet...paradise on my doorstep every morning I woke up... Living on my own and don't know HOW to COOK for Myself and need to learn. Where do I begin?
Q. I'll be living in an apartment with my own kitchen next semester and would like to be as self-sufficient as possible. Can you give this sheltered college student some advice on cooking and maintaining a kitchen? What do I need in my kitchen, and what are some good things to cook on a tight budget? What should I learn to cook and where/how can I learn? Thanks a bunch for all your help!

A. Buy cook books for beginners and watch the food network. Get easy to follow recipes from magazines, cook books, internet (Food Network.com is awesome). And, of course family and friends. Don't hesitate to call someone or have someone come over to walk you through a recipe. (I'm 37 years old and still call my mom, my step mom and my mother in law for help on some things.) The best way to learn is just get in there and don't get overwhelmed. If you will be living alone, you just need the basics: a good skillet, sauce pan, collander for draining pastas and hamburger meat, a crock pot is great because you can put everything in it and start it on low and let it cook all day and you don't have to watch is constantly. How much different is it living with your best friend than seeing her nearly every day?
Q. I see my best friend 6 out of the 7 days of the week usually. We are planning on living together for a semester in college next year (we're juniors btw) but I've heard living with your best friend can tear you two apart no matter how close you are. How does this happen? And what's the difference between living with them and seeing them ALL the time? Experience would be lovely!

A. I definitely have experience. I lived with my best friend for a semester in college. It didn't "tear us apart," but it was slightly difficult. We had been bff's for 8 years at this point and seen each other every single day also. But believe it or not, it's different being with the person even more than usual and adjusting to each other's living habits. But if you feel comfortable with it, then definitely go for it. It's better than being roommates with a complete stranger when you start college. I've experience that too, and it was far worse. Just be prepared for anything, and be able to talk to each other about things. =]
